AL (draft), 1785 July 26, Elizabeth, N.J., to the Marquis de Lafayette.

Thanks Lafayette for his care for the orphan son of their friend Rev. James Caldwell. Says that Europeans have difficulty understanding the nature of American democracy and explains how this political system has affected foreign trade. The last half of the letter concerns an unnamed herb used by Indian women during pregnancy, and its increasing use in the white community. Also mentions that the late Dr. Hugh Martin's powder for the cure of cancer has been passed on to another practitioner.
